A roll of thunder rumbled in the distance, and Carol nodded as if God were marking her words. “Destroy those things,” she said. “Destroy them and forget about Robbin. Do it today, do it before Nate finds out the real reason you’re not wanting to attend the execution.

That man found his son dying and he couldn’t do a thing to save him. You got to remember that. Remember how much that digs into him. No, there’s no way he’d tolerate you turning on him like this, and that’s what it is, Irene. That’s just what it is.”

Irene opened her mouth to speak, but Carol silenced her with a shake of her head. “You understand what I’m saying? I’m trying to save your ship, girl. But there’s no doing it if you go ahead with your crazy ideas.”

Irene held her sister’s stare, then nodded, once, twice.

“Good.” Carol brushed her chest as if she were cleaning off crumbs. “That’s good. I’ll check with you later today. Then tonight I’ll call Nate and tell him to leave you be about all this execution stuff.” Carol placed a hand on Irene’s shoulder. “I know I haven’t walked the path you have, Irene, but I also know no good can come out of all this.” She nodded at the box.

“Robbin is set to die. It’s what everything’s been leading toward. And as far as I can see, all you’re doing is setting yourself up for another fall.”
